RIDE GREEN GIRO
It aims to reduce the effects of the passage of the Corsa Rosa by properly managing the waste generated by the race, using a traceability system. With the help of more than 200 volunteers and numerous local companies, also coordinated by the ERICA cooperative, the waste produced at the different sites is collected in special ecological islands placed at strategic points of each stage, and then sent to recycling to be returned to the production cycle.
In this process comes the support of the municipalities that organize the start and finish of the stages of the race, which act as intermediaries for the promotion of the initiative and guarantee effective monitoring that allows the Giro d ‘Italia to position itself on the international stage as an increasingly green event. The Giro aims to spread the principles of sustainability everywhere, making the public, local governments, partners and all the athletes involved increasingly aware. At the end of each edition, the most active and best performing localities are honored. In 2021, the starting municipalities of Lanciano (95.26%), Mileto (94.33%) and Castrovillari (93.64%) were on the green stage.
No less than 46,000 kilograms of waste were collected in total, 85% of which was separated and disposed of for recycling. Separate waste collection, recycling of materials, performance measurement and public awareness are thus the primary objectives of the Ride Green Giro d ‘Italia project.
Giro-E
There is also the Giro-E initiative. This is the stage event with electrically assisted bikes that takes amateur cyclists on the same days and roads of the Corsa Rosa, to a unique and professional experience. An e-bike experience where the participants, divided into teams on their e-bikes, travel part of the route of the stages of the Giro.
