THE THREE MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKE TOURS IN SALZKAMMERGUT

Everyone who goes on cycling vacations knows the blissful feeling of cycling in nature with water all around you. Sweating in the saddle with a view of the lake and the pleasant thought of cooling off in the water after your workout. All the cycling tours through the Salzkammergut region are definitely fantastic, but the special attraction of the cycling region lies in the blue of the water.

For the unique lake landscape with some 70 (!) lakes has a magical attraction for us. Numerous tours can be planned directly around the most beautiful lakes in the area. And fair is fair: you can enjoy sweaty climbs as well as coffee and cake to the max between the mountain and the water. To ensure that the next summer cycling vacation in the Salzkammergut can be optimally planned, here is our top three cycling tours along the water.

"...but the special attraction of the cycling region lies in the blue of the water."

1 Weissenbachtal via the Mondsee

96 km – 860 altimeters

This highlight tour has some beautiful lakes in its pocket. The fairly flat bike tour with approx. 900 altitude meters first leads from Fuschl am See to the fantastic view over the Wolfgangsee to St. Gilgen. Almost flat along the Wolfgangsee lake, after Strobl we follow the old and less busy Wolfgangseestrasse towards Bad Ischl, passing briefly through the old cultural town in the direction of Ebensee. From the main road, however, after a short time we turn left into the Weißenbachtal. A slight rise with the subsequent undulating course leads us in the middle of a forest to the Attersee, which we reach on the south side. Our tour continues along the northeastern shore of the crystal-clear Mondsee. After half the circuit we return to Fuschl am See on small quiet roads via Thalgau with a longer but easy, uphill climb.

2 Gaisberg via Strubklamm

60 km – 1,120 altimeters

The canyon-like Strubklamm is a bizarre gorge of dolomite rock. We ride north and pass numerous lakes. From Fuschl am See we go over the Perfalleck on very traffic-free roads and over a short climb towards Faistenau. Along the Hintersee we reach the beautiful Strubklamm. A steep precipice and a short tunnel accompany us on the left side until we reach Wiestal. Shortly before the Wiestal reservoir we turn right into a small road to Hinterwinkl. From there the initially slight climb to the Gaisberg begins with a 14% rise at the end. At the summit we are rewarded with a magnificent view of the city of Salzburg. On the way back, we enjoy the long descent to the main street at Guggenthal. From there it is a somewhat bumpy ride on the main road past Hof near Salzburg and back to Fuschl am See.

3 Postalm via Hallein

112 km – 1,680 m in altitude

This beautiful tour takes us to Hallein and especially past the breathtaking Wiestal reservoir, which we otherwise don’t really get close to. In

Hallein a detour to the high quality distillery is worthwhile. Just be careful with tasting or you won’t make it through this round trip.
