THE TANNHEIMER TAL

A cross-border cycling paradise with an extraordinary panorama: the Tannheimer Tal is not called "the most beautiful high valley in Europe" for nothing. The region, nestled between idyllic alpine meadows and steep mountain peaks, encourages cyclists to tough training sessions with magnificent views and diverse courses. In the Tannheimer Tal, people have always wanted to aim high and not just with the legendary bike marathon.

Cycling tradition

The Tannheimer Tal already has some great cycling history behind it: in 2001, the peloton of the Tour of Austria rode through the high valley. In 2005 the Bayern Rundfahrt followed with an opening stage on Tyrolean soil, and in 2007 the “Deutschland Tour” rolled through the region. That alone has made the Tannheimer Tal cycling region a destinations that looks attractive to explore. But if you can also carry the title of “most beautiful high valley in Europe,” then as a region you really do have the best assets to entice cycling enthusiasts from all over Europe to come and ride. Between the rugged peaks of the Allgäu Alps and the wide valley there is an undeniable cycling Eldorado for professionals, competition beasts and cycling tourists who have the ambition to skim high peaks.

Out of passion for cycling, the valley’s own cycling marathon was born and will be run on July 02 in 2023. They all show enthusiasm and perseverance during the annual Tannheimer Tal cycling marathon – the true Gran Fondo specialists, the ambitious cycling tourist, the proud beginners and the cheering spectators. A total of 215 kilometers and 3,500 altimeters from the foothills of the Alps to the high mountains – over flat roads, steep passes and winding descents, this is the toughest of the four different courses to choose from. In addition to this distance, there is also a variant with 129 km and 700 altimeters, as well as a route with 94 km and 530 altimeters. For beginners, there is the variant with 56 km and only 400 altimeters An easy version that can encourage many cyclists to do more in subsequent years. This means that all cycling enthusiasts actually have the opportunity to participate in this unique Tannheimer Tal cycling marathon experience.

But even apart from this annual cycling spectacle, the high valley fascinates with 22 bike tours covering some 2,500 kilometers. Whether in the neighboring Allgäu, in the Lechtal Alps, on Lake Constance or on the Arlberg – the region always guarantees great bike tours:

The classic four-pass tour: This tough tour combines the four most beautiful passes of the region: Gaichtpass, Flexenpass, Arlbergpass and the Hahntennjoch. The King’s Tour – in the footsteps of King Ludwig II:The King’s Tour stretches over 81 km and 1,100 altitude meters, while there are numerous castles and historical sites to discover.
