ROUND OF THE ALGARVE: ARRIVAL WHERE STATUE REMCO EVENEPOEL STANDS

After Gerben Thijssen's impressive sprint victory yesterday in the first stage, it's up to the classification riders today. They will test each other in this second 171.9 km stage, a first time on the Alto da Foia, which has its summit at 902 meters above sea level.

It is also the highest mountain in the Algarve. This climb is 7.5 kilometers long with an average gradient of 7.3% and is the only one of the first category in this round. Traditionally, this climb is located at the end of a stage through the Algarve’s beautiful interior and the Monchique Mountains, where the riders will have some difficult climbs under their wheels before the final climb.

Statue of Remco Evenepoel

Remco Evenepoel will be in his element today, as he already performed a nice cabinet piece here in 2020, resulting in a statue at the summit. With a long-distance sprint/attack from 400 meters from the finish, Evenepoel checkmated the remaining punchers and won the stage. The Portuguese must have been fairly impressed, because the local government placed a statue depicting the victorious Remco Evenepoel at the top of the climb.

Is Remco performing his 2020 cabinet piece again today? We will know around 5:45 p.m. Belgian time. The riders will start at 13:10.
