The Arlberg Giro is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular cycling races in the Alps. The 150-kilometer course, with an elevation gain of 2,500 meters, is a great challenge and at the same time showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Alps. From winding mountain roads to majestic views, the route combines technical difficulties with beautiful scenery, making it a must for cycling enthusiasts.
The race starts in St. Anton am Arlberg and the action begins almost immediately with the climb to the Arlberg Pass. This section has a maximum gradient of 15% and requires both strength and endurance from the participants. After overcoming this first challenge, the cyclists are rewarded with a fast descent to Bludenz, which offers a short breather, as the toughest climb is yet to come. The ascent of the Montafon is a grueling 15-kilometer climb that tests even the most seasoned athletes.
This section is not only physically demanding but also exciting, as the fastest cyclists on this climb earn the prestigious titles of “Queen and King of the Mountain.” The climb rewards participants with panoramic views of the surrounding mountain peaks, providing a moment of awe amid the exertion. From Partenen, the route leads through the Ganifer Valley up to the Kops Reservoir and the Zeinisjoch. The descent leads to the Paznaun Valley and then through the Stanzertal, bringing cyclists back to St. Anton. There, participants are greeted by cheering spectators as they sprint to the finish line, ending an unforgettable journey through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Alps.
The original route via the Silvretta High Alpine Road is not passable this year. However, this does not disadvantage the participants in any way, on the contrary:
• The alternative route is about 8 kilometers shorter.
• The elevation gain remains virtually identical due to the tough climb from the Montafon Valley.
• The route is made even more attractive by new panoramic views and varied topography.
The essence of the Arlberg Giro – the combination of endurance, speed, alpine scenery, and the Arlberg Giro family – remains completely intact.
Additional races – Highlights outside the main event
The Arlberg Giro is more than just a one-day event. Two additional races offer exciting opportunities for both participants and spectators and ensure a weekend full of cycling action.
St. Anton Night Sprint (July 31, 2026)
This exciting sporting event takes place on the Friday evening before the main race. 100 men and 100 women compete in individual sprints on a 200-meter course in the heart of St. Anton’s pedestrian zone. Participants race against the clock and aim to secure a place in the top 16, which will take them through to the elimination rounds. The final is held according to a knockout system, with the fastest riders competing against each other under the dramatic glow of a light show at dusk. The exciting atmosphere, combined with the thrilling races, guarantees an unforgettable experience for both participants and fans. The three best men and three best women will be crowned champions of this first sprint tournament.
International Cycling Criterium (August 1, 2026)
The evening before the main race, St. Anton is hosting another exciting event: the International Cycling Criterium. Elite teams from around the world will compete in this prestigious race, battling it out on a technically demanding circuit that winds through the center of the village. The criterium begins with the women’s race, in which the cyclists demonstrate their skill, speed, and determination as they navigate sharp turns and challenging sections. The men’s race follows shortly thereafter and offers just as much excitement. The highlight of the circuit is the infamous turn at Hotel Schwarzer Adler, which requires absolute precision and skill and makes the event even more thrilling.
The start and finish line in front of the town hall offers spectators an excellent view of the action and a unique opportunity to experience top-level cycling up close. For both participants and fans, the criterium is an exciting prelude to the main event.
